Your first acupuncture treatment - FAQs
What should I wear for acupuncture?
The most commonly used acupuncture points are located below the knees and elbows, so it is helpful if you wear something that allows easy access to those areas. Tuina massage is performed with clothes on. Loose trousers and tops with sleeves that can be rolled up are ideal for both acupuncture and Chinese massage treatments.
Should I eat before my acupuncture treatment?
Yes – please have something light to eat before treatment.
What will happen at my first acupuncture treatment?
At your first acupuncture treatment I will ask you lots of questions to gain a thorough understanding of your main complaint. You might feel that some of the questions are unrelated to your condition, but they help me to get a complete picture of your state of health and lifestyle.
I will also examine your tongue and feel your pulse and examine you for areas that are tender or painful.
The acupuncture treatment itself
I will use this information to make a treatment plan, which might include advice about diet and lifestyle as well as acupuncture. I will then use ultra-fine, single-use, sterile acupuncture needles to stimulate selected acupuncture points.
I may also use:
· Chinese therapeutic massage (tuina)
· Cupping – in which glass cups are placed on the skin with a vacuum seal to stimulate the flow of energy in the area
· Moxa – in which heat is applied to a particular point using a therapeutic herb
. Mindfulness - many patients choose to join me in some mindfulness meditation while they relax with the needles in place
Will acupuncture hurt?
Usually you will feel almost no sensation as I gently tap the acupuncture needle in. Sometimes you will feel a slight pricking sensation but this will be very fleeting. Once the acupuncture needles are in place you might feel a sensation of heaviness or a small ache around the area. Patients often report a feeling of relaxation, both during and after the treatment.
After your acupuncture treatment
You might feel a little tired or sleepy after the acupuncture treatment so please take this into account when planning what to do afterwards.
